What does the A stand for in LGBTQIA+? Most people believe that the A stands solely for Allies. However, in reality, it also stands for Asexuals and Aromantics, as well as Agender.
Many people in the LGBTQIA+ community believe that those who identify as asexual and/or aromantic should not be included. This is especially if some of these individuals still have ties to the heteronormative, such as being a heteromantic asexual, a heterosexual aromantic, and/or identifying with their gender assigned at birth. Others believe that asexuals and aromantics are not "oppressed" enough to truly be part of the community. Ironically, this oppresses them because it denies them a safe-space where they can be accepted.
Those who identify as asexual and/or aromantic should be included in this community. It should not be a competition of who is oppressed the most by society, but it should be a safe place where people can freely express themselves without the judgement of society. Asexuals and aromantics are part of this community because these aspects of them are not part of the cis-allo-hetero norm of society. It's harmful to not recognize them as part of the LGTBGIA+ community because then no one at all will be willing to recognize.
Most people are not very aware about the existence of asexual or aromantic individuals. This website will help educate the general public about these two valid orientations.
